YERBA MATE GOURDS

Yerba Mate Gourd is traditionally made from the fruit of the calabash plant. Throughout history this fruit has been hollowed out and dried and used as a water-carrying vessel in most cultures and throughout the world. Over the past 500 years, it has been used to enjoy a traditional South American drink Yerba Mate that’s gaining worldwide popularity.

The origins of yerba mate are filled with folklore. Discovered by the indigenous peoples of the forests of Paraguay and Southern Brazil, it was known as a herb “from the gods” used mostly for physical stamina. Yerba mate has the strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate, all in a single drink. Decreed the symbol of friendship by Yari, mythical goddess of mate, the culture of yerba mate is just as rich as its flavor.

Traditionally, yerba mate is infused with hot water in a hollowed-out gourd. The liquid is filtered through a metal straw called a bombilla and is usually shared among friends who take a sip and pass it along.

This tradition has been passed down for generations: yerba mate awakens the mind, brings people together and creates a community that stretches around the world.

In a large group, the mate will make the rounds, but just one individual is responsible for that. The one who makes the mate is called the “cebador.” When the mate is ready, the cebador takes the first serving and refills the gourd. Then, handing the gourd to the next person, the cebador waits while the person drinks and passes the empty gourd back. In a large enough group, two gourds may be circulating, but the process is the same: take, drink, return.
